A man from Georgia was arrested by authorities after he poured a pot of boiling water over a gay couple as they slept.
Martin Blackwell scalded 21-year-old Marquez Tolbert and partner Anthony Gooden, 23, while they were resting at the apartment of Gooden’s mother, who is Blackwell’s girlfriend.
The 48-year-old homophobe, according to an article published by CBS News on March 18, 2016, has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery in the incident that took place last February 12.
During the attack, Blackwell, who was only a guest in the apartment, supposedly told his victims: “Get out of my house with all that gay.”
Blackwell then forced Tolbert and Gooden out of the apartment. Neighbors took the couple, who suffered second- and third-degree burns to their backs, heads and necks, to a hospital for treatment..
Tolbert spent 10 days undergoing surgery at the Grady Memorial Hospital.
Tolbert told media the excruciating pain he experienced. He said: “The pain doesn’t let you sleep. It’s just excruciating, 24 hours a day, and it doesn’t go anywhere.”
Gooden, who was burned more severely, spent five weeks in the hospital. He was placed in a medically-induced coma while doctors repair his burned skin. He was released from the hospital only a week ago.
A police report disclosed that Blackwell said he was disgusted with the couple’s relationship. He claimed the pair was making love when he poured boiling water on them.
“They were stuck together like two hot dogs, so I poured a little hot water on them and helped them out. They were stuck like two hot dogs. They’ll be all right. It was just a little hot water,” Blackwell told officers.
Blackwell is being held at the Fulton County Jail.
