- Davao City mayor topped February polls conducted by Rappler
- He garnered 39 percent of the total number of votes in the poll
- This is the third Rappler text survey he has topped
MANILA, Philippines – Call him the Texters’ President.
Lacking the traditional machinery of his presidential rivals, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s grassroots approach may just be raking in the dividends as highlighted by his topping of a presidential poll for the third time in a row.
The text blast poll, conducted by Rappler together with Laylo Research Strategies among 47,138 Globe subscribers from February 15 to 29, shows the mayor garnering 39 percent of the total number of votes — way ahead of second-placer Mar Roxas who only got 20 percent.
Behind Roxas is Vice President Jejomar Binay with 16 percent, Sen. Grace Poe with 13 percent, and Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago with only five percent.
This is the third time Duterte has won a Rappler-conducted poll. He won a December 2015 survey with an overwhelming 40 percent although the sample consisted mainly of low-income female respondents outside Metro Manila.
Last January, the mayor topped the survey which closely reflected the voter demographic of the latest poll, garnering 35 percent of the votes. In that poll, Roxas also ended up in second place with 19 percent followed by Binay with 16 percent, Poe with 13 percent, and Santiago with five percent.
According to pollster Carijane Laylo, Duterte’s strong showing in the latest poll which was conducted after the first presidential debate indicated a seal of approval from his supporters and Mindanaoans who watched the event.
At the same time, she said Poe’s victory in the Supreme Court could very well prove to tip the scales in the next round of surveys.
