- Included in the destroyed illegal drugs were 461 kilograms of shabu worth P2.236 billion
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) destroyed 1.67 metric tons of various illegal drugs with an estimated street value of P2.67 billion.
A Suntar article dated February 11, 2016 disclosed that according to PDEA chair Undersecretary Arturo G. Cacdac Jr., the dangerous drugs that were seized during several anti-illegal drugs operations countrywide were destroyed on Thursday morning, February 11, through thermal decomposition or thermolysis at the Integrated Waste Management Inc. facility in Barangay Aguado, Trece Martires City in Cavite.
Thermal decomposition is the breaking down of chemical compound by heat into smaller components which do not recombine on cooling.
Cacdac, who led the destruction ceremony, said the destroyed dangerous drugs included methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu, liquid shabu, ketamine, marijuana, ephedrine, aziridine, norephedrine, pseudoephedrine and expired medicines.
He said a total of 465.8 kilograms of shabu with an estimated street value of P2.236 billion were destroyed at the facility.
“Majority of the burned shabu were seized from two storage facilities in San Fernando, Pampanga which we smashed on September 12, 2014,” the PDEA chief said; referring to the combined PDEA and Philippine National Police operation in Pampanga that led to the arrest of four Chinese nationals and the confiscation of 461 kilograms of shabu.
During the destruction ceremony which was witnessed by Department of Justice Undersecretary Zabedin Asis, Cacdac told members of the media present at the site, “We want the public to witness the destruction of dangerous drugs seized by drug enforcement officers in order to allay apprehensions that these illicit substances are being reused, recycled or sold back in the streets.”
He added that the quantity of destroyed illegal drugs is the highest in terms of weight and total value since 2010.
