We’ve seen many lists featuring celebrities, millionaires, and billionaires who didn’t finish college from foreign countries. What about Pinoys?
TNP listed down ten celebrities who made a name for themselves without a college degree. Here they are:
1) Alden Richards
First off the list is Richard Reyes Faulkerson, Jr. or Alden Richards.
The ‘Pambansang Bae’ rose to fame last year as the other half of the meteoric love team, AlDub.
His early break into showbiz wasn’t as extraordinary. He joined Starstruck but failed to get into the finals. GMA management, however, took notice of him, and he had to drop out of his course—Business Administration in De La Salle Canlubang—to concentrate on acting.
He appeared in several shows until that fated meeting on screen with Maine Mendoza, which started Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye and the AlDub phenomenon.
2) Piolo Pascual
Another heartthrob on the list is Jose Piolo Pascual, or Piolo Pascual.
Piolo’s father was a casting director, but he was introduced to acting only after joining the theater club in St. Francis School in Sta. Ana, Manila. Later on, Kuya Germs’ discovered and recruited him to That’s Entertainment while he was in high school.
For a while, he stopped acting to concentrate on his studies. He took AB Education, then shifted to Physical Therapy at the University of Sto. Tomas, before dropping out.
Pascual immigrated with his family to the US, but he came back to the Philippines at 21 to revive his acting career. And, as they say, the rest is history.
He appeared in blockbusters such as Milan, Dekada ‘70, and the internationally-acclaimed movie On the Job.
3) Angel Locsin
Like Papa P, Angel Locsin is a University of Sto. Tomas alumnae. She studied in UST from elementary up to high school while acting on the side.
Although she began in ABS-CBN, Angel Locsin became a household name after becoming the lead actress in GMA’s Mulawin and Darna. From then on, she reaped many acting awards, including a nod from the Emmy’s for her performance as Lyka in Lobo.
She didn’t attend college, but enrolled a short-course in fashion design at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London

4) John Lloyd Cruz
Our next college dropout is John Lloyd Cruz.
Before he became a box-office king, he was just a regular high school in Pasig Catholic College until a talent scout discovered him while strolling in the mall. He signed with Star Circle Magic and steadily build his box-office cred.
His movies always grossed at least P100-million, especially A Second Chance, which became the country’s second highest-grossing movie of all time at P550-million.
Understandably, his schedule was so busy he didn’t have enough time to study. In an interview, Cruz said he envied his friend and Star Circle Magic batchmate, Mark Solis, for finishing college.
5) Yeng Constantino
At 18, Josephine Eusebio Constantino, or Yeng Constantino, graced our screens when she joined the first season of Pinoy Dream Academy. She impresssed music legends such as Jim Paredes and Raimund Marasigan, and became the first ever Grand Star Dreamer.
She had no time to study because her career took off right after then show when she released her first album Salamat. Now, she’s a hitmaker in her own right.
While she didn’t finish tertiary education, she’s learning to become a better songwriter, recording artist, and host.
6) Regine Velasquez
Regine Velasquez, who admitted that she sang before she could read, had a stellar career despite not stepping in college.
Ms. Velasquez is the Best-Selling Aritst in the Philippines with 8.5 million units sold here and in Asia. She’s not named “Asia’s songbird” for nothing. She collaborated with international legends such as Paul Anka, David Hasselhoff, and Alicia Keys, and performed in Araneta and Carnegie Hall.
A few years ago, Ms. Velasquez shared how she struggled in school because of dyslexia.
Despite her disability, she thrived as a celebrated artist and gives back to the community through her philanthropy.

7) Gary Valenciano
Before he became Mr. Pure Energy, Gary Valenciano attended La Salle Greenhills in both elementary and high school.
He was part of the choir until he appeared in The Pilita and Jackie Show–for youngesters, it’s like ASAP with better voices–and gradually grew into an OPM legend, having sold-out shows in Araneta and winning Awit Awards 12 times.
While he didn’t finish college, he received an honorary doctorate degree in Humanities from Baptist Bible College Asia at the Ynares Sports Stadium in Pasig last March.
8) Ricky Reyes
Ricardo Enriquez Reyes, Jr, or Ricky Reyes, became famous for helping artistas and VIPs become more beautiful.
Mother Ricky came from a poor family, and was the breadwinner at a very young age. His mother couldn’t send him to college, so he worked as an errand boy in a small salon, sweeping floors, until he saved enough money to start his own business.
To help other children like him, he created the Ricky Reyes Learning Institute to teach them vocational skills. Because of his advocacies, he was named “48 Heroes of Philanthropy in Asia-Pacific Region” by Forbes in 2010.
9) Bong Revilla
Bong Revilla followed the career path of his father: actor-politician.
After finishing secondary level in Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, he became an artista, appearing in action films and Panday remakes, before stepping into politics.
He, first, ran as vice-governer and governor of Cavite, before becoming a senator. There were rumors that he would run for president or vice president, but was stopped short. His name was implicated in the pork barrel scam, landing the actor-politician in jail.
10) Vilma Santos
Like Bong Revilla, Vilma Santos or Ate Vi became a celebrity before jumping into politics.
From a very young age, Ate Vi was already a star, after appearing in the classic movie, Trudis Liit. She appeared in blockbuster after blockbuster and solidified her status as the “Star for All Seasons.”
In her later years, she entered politics as a mayor in Lipa, later as governer of Batangas, and now congresswoman of the 6th District of Batangas.
Despite not completing college, she was given an honorary degree by Lipa City College. Unlike Revilla, her name wasn’t implicated in corruption. The University of the Philippines even gave her the prestigious Gawad Plaridel Award as an actress and as a public servant.
