- Exit polls conducted in 15 countries where OFWs participated in overseas absentee voting showed Mayor Duterte winning the presidency
- The maverick mayor is also an early favorite to win as president as indicated by the last surveys days before the Election Day
- If elected, Duterte promised a comfortable life for the Filipinos
An exit polling of Filipino citizens currently residing and working in other countries who participated in the overseas absentee voting suggested maverick Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will be voted as the Philippines’ next president.
As per Wikipedia, an exit poll asks for whom the voter actually voted. It is usually conducted to gain an early indication as to how an election has turned out.
ABC News correspondent for Manila Adam Harvey said in his article dated May 9, 2016 that the maverick Davao City mayor has 52 to 85 percent of the vote in the 15 countries where exit polls were conducted.
Mayor Duterte, whose anti-crime and anti-corruption platform has become popular among the Filipinos fed up with rising criminality in the country, is an early favorite to win the elections as he posted double-digit lead ahead of his rivals in the last survey leading to the Election Day.
In his final campaign rally held at the Luneta Park in Manila, the tough-talking mayor reiterated his promise to kill criminals – even in front of his human rights critics.
“I will butcher criminals in front of them if they want,” he told a crowd of an estimated 600,000 supporters.
But he also vowed to give Filipinos a comfortable life and suppress the illegal drugs menace, if elected.
He promised the Filipinos could look forward to “a comfortable life under me… comfortable because there will not be too much crime. And the drugs — I will suppress it to the barest minimum”.
