MARINDUQUE, Philippines – During his campaign sortie held in Marinduque on Thursday, May 5, presidential front-runner Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte reiterated to the Catholic voters to follow what the bishops advised them to do and this is to not vote for him. However, Duterte also challenged the bishops to iron out the country’s problems.
“I do not care even if all the bishops would say wag kayong bumoto kay Duterte kase mamamatay tao [don’t vote for Duterte because he’s a killer]. Now I want you bishops to solve the problem of the country, if you can do it, then do it], then I will withdraw.”
In his speech, the tough-talking mayor vilified the Catholic bishops saying he may be sent to Hell, but he is sure he’ll find some of the sinner priests and bishops there too, adding he only bows to his country and to God.
“Pag hindi (ninyo) tayo maniwala doon sa bishop ninyo baka mapunta kayo sa impyerno [If you don’t follow your bishop you might go to hell]. But when I get there, these priests and bishop who are married will also be there, hey, how are you]?”
“I only bow to my country and God. Simula ngayon may bago ditong boss ha, to-its [That’s just two. Don’t try to scare me with hell because when I get there, Satan will have a problem. Psst.. come here. P****** I’ll punch you! From now on I’m the boss here (pertaining to himself)].”
In an article published by Abante on May 7, Duterte was quoted as saying that if he gets elected as President, the Catholic church will not have any role under his administration. He said:
“No more. Why should I acknowledge them? They say I should not be elected. I will not die if the Catholics will not vote for me.”
To which Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles reacted:
If he doesn’t need the votes of the Catholics, which is about 81%, so be it] .”
