- UK’s envoy in Manila is confident with the result of the national elections
- UK Ambassador to the Philippines said they are optimistic about what Rodrigo Duterte will do
- The UK also expressed that they will continue to give support to the Philippines
The United Kingdom (UK) envoy in the Philippines expressed its confidence on the national election’s results last May 9.
Asif Ahmad, the UK’s Ambassador to the Philippines, told CNN Philippines in an interview that they are now awaiting positive changes in the country based on the promises that were made by the incoming president, Rodrigo Duterte.
Ahmad was one of the foreign observers who watched the conduct of the elections last Monday.
“Violence in the world coming from extremism, this is something we are concerned about the Filipino and it requires a global effort. We are very encouraged on what Mayor Duterte’s made on his platform and pronouncements.”
He expressed optimism on the people’s choice leader.
“We are optimistic because the people of the Philippines have expressed their hopes and their wishes, and no politician can ignore the strong mandate that they’ve been given,” he said in an interview on the news program, Mornings @ ANC.
Ahmad also stressed that they will continue to support the Philippines.
“The real obligation starts from day 1 in office, because the delivery is going to be the final judgement of whether this new presidency is a success or not, and we wish it every success and the UK will be its partner,” Ahmad added.
Ahmad said their government has already recognized the potential of the Philippines a long time ago. Their government is one of the country’s major investors.
“We already, from the UK, the number one investor in the Philippines from the European Union. We have a lot of stake here. So it’s not that we are conditional and would hold back, we want to do more,” he explained.
The United States (U.S.) Embassy in Manila has earlier released an official statement complimenting the Philippines and its incoming president, Duterte, after the elections. Furthermore, in the statement, they said they are looking forward to strengthening and deepening bilateral relations with the new administration.
