• The Communist Party of the Philippines clarified that it does not support Mayor Duterte’s presidential candidacy
• The CPP said it does not participate in the elections of the Philippine government
• It belied Senator Miriam Santiago’s statement that Duterte is an official candidate of the NPA
The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) clarified that it does not participate in the elections of the Philippine government nor does it endorse a presidential candidate.
A CNN Philippines article that was published on May 8, 2016 said the CPP made the clarification as a reaction to Senator Miriam Santiago’s statement that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is the official candidate of the New People’s Army, the armed component of the CPP.
Senator Santiago warned that Duterte’s supporters may take arms if he does not win in the May 9 elections.
“NPA will act on the basis of their own ideology which is government is bad, and that government should be given to citizenry,” Santiago added.
The CPP belied the lady senator’s statements.
“Contrary to Senator Santiago’s claims yesterday, Mayor Duterte is not being endorsed nor supported by the Party or NPA,” CPP’s statement read.
Likewise, the CPP branded as pure lies the claims of the Armed Forces of the Philippines that members of the NPA in some parts of the country are campaigning for the maverick mayor.
“Indeed, Mayor Duterte has espoused certain advocacies that strike a chord among the Filipino people and their national democratic forces, including calling for peace negotiations to address the roots of the armed conflict,” pointed out the CPP.
“Duterte has mostly styled himself an anti-crime crusader, a socialist, and radical in an effort to win over the people who long have been disillusioned with the rotten ruling system,” the CPP noted.
Former President Fidel V. Ramos said Mayor Duterte is not a communist despite his alleged links to Joma Sison, founder of CCP.
“If by talking and being friendly with Joma Sison makes Mayor Duterte a communist, I must then be in a far more worse situation,” he said.
Duterte’s efforts to unite the nation is a “right move” and must be welcomed instead of being criticized and condemned, Ramos added.
