- VP-elect Leni Robredo reaffirmed her support for President-elect Rodrigo Duterte
- Robredo says supporting Duterte means providing “other perspectives…to broaden his view”
- Both Duterte and Robredo come from rival political parties
Vice President-elect Leni Robredo reaffirmed her support for President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, noting that supporting him also means providing “other perspectives on various positions to broaden his view.”
Robredo’s statement comes after Duterte’s much publicized live press conferences where he shared controversial remarks that has sparked much political debate.
“Supporting him means doing what we can to help him serve our people, and our nation, the best that he can. This includes providing, with the other members of his team, other perspectives on various issues to broaden his view, and afford him the breadth of vision that is so essential to the leader of our nation,” she said in a statement that was previously quoted by GMA News.
In addition, Robredo and Duterte come from rival parties. The President-elect ran under PDP-Laban while the Vice President-elect was a Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer.
Earlier, Duterte said he will not be offering Robredo any position in his Cabinet. Despite his pronouncement, however, Robredo says she will still champion her advocacy of grassroots empowerment for the poor as the VP.
“I have always taken the position that we should give our full support to our newly elected President. When we help him to succeed, we are helping our nation, and ourselves, succeed,” she said.
The incoming VP also pointed out “the power and prestige of the Presidency” in light of the controversial remarks made by the tough-talking Duterte, especially about journalist killings and the treatment of women in the country.
“It is a testament to the power and prestige of the presidency that each statement and each action of our leader is taken as an indicator of official policy. Hence the need for constant vigilance and circumspection, to avoid raising any unnecessary concern, particularly over issues as sensitive as the murder of journalists and the treatment of women in our society,” Robredo said.
Both Duterte and Robredo will be taking their respective oath of office on June 30.
