Ten thousand new policemen and women are set to take their oaths on July as new members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the secretary of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) said.
Interior Secretary Mel Senen S. Sarmiento, who is concurrently the Chairman of the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM), said the new recruits will boost police visibility nationwide.
“Peace and order are vital in the country’s economic development. The DILG and NAPOLCOM are committed in increasing police manpower strength, improve police-to-population ratio, and enhance police visibility program and anti-insurgency operation of the Philippine National Police,” he said.
The new recruits are part of the first cycle of the PNP’s two-cycle Police Officer 1 (PO1) Recruitment Program for 2016, which is called “PO1 Regular Recruitment Program.”
The outgoing DILG secretary said these new recruits went through rigorous screening which includes “face-to-face-interviews, drug tests, psychological and psychiatric examination, complete background investigation, and committee deliberation, among others.”
Some of the new PO1s will be assigned to different Police Regional Offices that operates in insurgency-affected areas to boost their Public Safety Forces, while others will go to National Operational Support Units of the PNP such as the Special Action Force, Maritime Group and Aviation Security Group.
Secretary Sarmiento said the 2nd cycle of the PNP’s recruitment program will start this month (June). Another 11,200 new PO1s will be needed to replace policemen who were “attrited for reasons of retirement, death, dropping from the rolls, separation, dismissal and resignation from the police service.”
Sarmiento encouraged brave Filipinos, men and women alike, who were aspiring to join the PNP, to visit the nearest police stations in their areas or check the PNP website for recruitment details.
