For this 6-year-old boy from Massachusetts, who is aspiring to be a police officer when he grows up, no one is above the law —not even his own father.
When Robbie Richardson took a ride with his dad and saw him drive past a red light, he did what he thought was the right thing to do and called the authorities.
A recording of the 911 call was shared Wednesday, June 1, on the Quincy Police Department Facebook page.
“Every day we answer numerous 911 calls,” Quincy Police said. “Often times, these calls are from individuals who are in need of immediate assistance. Sometimes, it’s a simple misdial. Then there’s Robert’s 9-1-1 call.”
Robbie and his dad, Mike, were on their way to a car wash after doing the grocery last Saturday, May 28, when Mike turned right on a red light, which is legal in Massachusetts, as per an article published by Time.
Mike tried to explain to his son that what he did was legal, but the aspiring police officer wasn’t convinced because he was taught that only green means go and red means stop, so he proceeded to call 911 as soon as they got home.
Mike Bowes, the dispatch officer who fielded the call, got a laugh out of the exchange.
“Interesting listening to him tell me the whole story about how his father ran the light in his mother’s new car,” Bowes said.
Robbie’s mom, Joleen McDonald, said she was proud of Robbie for making the call. She shared she taught him to call 911 after watching a particularly sad news story.
“He thought he was doing the right thing,” she told CNN, adding that she can’t believe how many people are talking about Robbie. “That’s what we need these days.”
